Here’s where one of my favourite authors, Jane Austen and her mother Cassandra Austen stayed for a while with her mother’s cousin Reverend Thomas Leigh.

The Cotswolds is synonymous to market villages, sheep grazing over rolling hills, thatched-roof cottages made of honey-coloured limestone and meadows as far as your eyes can see.  It is the quintessence of picturesque countryside.

It feels like you’re walking right through the settings of a romantic English novel from another era.

No wonder, some of the Cotswolds villages severed as a filming location for many popular movies such as Harry Potter, Brave Heart, Pride and Prejudice, and The Holiday among others.

Not for nothing, the Cotswolds is also part of Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It covers about 800 square miles across the English counties of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Wiltshire. It is the largest of 38 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England and Wales.

Also, what’s interesting to note is that the houses in the Cotswolds abide by the strict laws of using only Oolitic limestone (formed during the Jurassic period). It is used both to build and to renovate the buildings and helps to maintain the traditional way of constructing houses in this region, one of the things it is famous for.

The Cotswolds is also known for its pub meals made of local produce, quirky shops, farmers markets and unique festivals.

You ought to try the traditional afternoon tea called cream tea with an array of sweet accompaniment.
